I've written several how-to books over the years. My first, The Simple Screamer: A Guide to the Art of Papier and Cloth Mache (1984, Gibbs Smith Publishers) sold in bookstores around the world for over 22 years. The Screamer book and its sequel, Make Something Ugly for a Change: The definitive Guide to Papier and Cloth Mache (1999, Gibbs Smith Publisher) became collector's items after they went out of print. You can still find them online for ridiculous prices. I know, life is strange.
After two years of hard work I am very happy to announce the arrival of the sequel to the sequel to that first Screamer book, Papier Mache Monsters: Turn Trinkets and Trash into Magnificent Monstrosities (Gibbs Smith Publishers, Layton, Utah). This is the most comprehensive book about papier and cloth mache I've ever put together. I truly tell all in this book, every technique and trick I've developed over my many years of doing this work. In the book I illustrate the making of a basic monster (like the original Screamer, watch my video, "Papier Mache Monsters"), a marionette (for those of you who want your monsters to dance), trophies (like the one in my "Paper Mache Dragon Trophy" video), the traditional paper mache piggy (the one in my "Paper Mache Piggy" video), and finally, the ugly doll (turn something pretty into something pretty ugly...but fun). You'll note that I didn't list "dragon" in the list of chapters in my new book. That's because dragons are a bit more specialized and I just didn't have enough room to devote a chapter to dragon making. Dragon making simply needed its own how-to book. So...for you dragon lovers, consider buying my Dragon-Maker's Handbook. It details the making of the red dragon in my "Paper Mache Dragon" video. It is 46 pages with 300+ color photos to guide you through the process. It clearly illustrates my papier and cloth mache methods. I offer two versions of this book. Also, for those of you with children, or for those of you who enjoy nicely illustrated dragon books, check out my book, William's Treasure. Okay, so this has nothing to do with paper mache (although the 3D version of the star of the book, William, graces the cover of the Papier Mache Monster book! Isn't he cute?). While my claim to fame has been papier mache, I am most proud of this book. I carried this story in my head for many years. I put my papier mache aside for a couple years to get this book out of my head and into a book. I can say unabashedly that everyone who sees this book loves it. In fact, if you buy it and don't like it, you can keep the book and I'll refund your money (well, except for shipping).

Note about buying multiple books. If you buy the Dragon Handbook and a William book at the same time, I'll combine the shipment and rebate some of your shipping costs. Oddly, if you want to buy the Dragon Handbook and the Monster book, it is cheaper to order them separately. Because of the weight, buying both means I must ship Priority which bumps the price of shipping for the Dragon Book (which I usually ship First Class) which makes combining the order more expensive. However, if you are an International customer, it is cheaper to buy both together. Contact me if you intend to buy both and you live outside the US.

William lives in the forest. His life is simple and serene, although punctuated by episodes of frivolity and pure joy. A new William emerges, one that wants stuff. He starts collecting things, first by the handful, then the armful, a wagon load, a small heap, and ultimately a gigantic pile. Concurrently, his innocent, happy life gives way to one of worry, anxiety, paranoia, and an insatiable appetite for more. Eventually, the need to reclaim his old blissful self pulls William off his pile of stuff and sends him back to his forest home. I think that this story perfectly illustrates the classic relationship between stuff and happiness.
